Scotland is represented by the volume that launched the City Shields series. In the fall of 1999, while on vacation there with my husband, Michael Sutton, a single manhole cover caught my eye. Its design, so different from those back home, led to a two‑week exploration with a Sony Mavica digital camera and a substantial photographic collection of Scottish manhole covers that became the first City Shields volume.
